# Episode 10 — Bob audits a Forecast list that was his own Bob wrote a Forecast order, Alice repeated it as her plan and pinned it, and two turns later Bob warned that "her" order ran backwards. His rule was right, and the harness's menu note stated the same rule. Neither seat's list could be played anyway, because most of its cities were not among the deck's top six. Alice's recorded reasoning shows what she did with all of this: she read the menu's real six, credited Bob for the direction, and chose the order herself. | | | |---|---| | Game | [Game 8](/games/game-08/summary.md): 2 players, open hands, 4 epidemics | | Seats | alice = Scientist, bob = Contingency Planner; both `zai/glm-5.3-flash`, reasoning high | | Kind | **error catch of the auditor's own list**: a partner audits a plan against a rule, and the plan was his | | Moment | turns 7–10, log #58–#86 | | Game result | won, with no claim that this exchange mattered to it | | Harness involvement | **mixed**: the direction rule and the real top six were on alice's menu; the list was bob's; the order played was alice's | | Stakes | low | | Evidence | [fact sheet](/episodes/facts/game-08-t8.md), harness lookup, follow-through | ## 1. Position Black is the emergency. At #58 black supply stands at 5 with 19 cubes on the board: Delhi holds 3 black cubes, Chennai and Tehran 2 each, and three outbreaks have happened. Alice stands in Kolkata, a Scientist, holding Milan, Sao Paulo, Riyadh, Sydney and the Forecast card she has just drawn. Bob stands in Istanbul, a Contingency Planner, with seven cards, four of them black (Mumbai, Tehran, Moscow, Baghdad). Red is cured and Atlanta is the only station. By #69, after bob cleared Moscow (#60–#63) and drew Kolkata, he holds a full black set and black supply is 8. The top six cards of the infection deck are hidden. Before #69 they were, top first: Moscow, Mexico City, San Francisco, Kolkata, Istanbul, Bangkok. ## 2. What each seat knew Hands are open, so both seats saw that alice held Forecast. Alice's first message about it asked for input: > **#58 alice:** I drew FORECAST — I'll play it free at the start of my turn to reorder the top 6 infection cards and bury as many black cities as possible; tell me if you'd rather I bury something else **What the harness put in front of alice.** When her turn began she was active and her prompt carried a menu entry for Forecast with the deck's real top six and a note on how to order them. Bob's #68 reached her in the next prompt, so she met the note first (this ordering was checked by hand against her recorded prompts). > **prompt alice, before #69:** forecast: the menu entry lists the infection deck's REAL top 6, in their CURRENT order, nearest draw first […] cities you put EARLY are drawn soonest, so lead with the harmless ones and bury any city already at **What the harness put in front of bob.** Nothing about Forecast. Bob was an advisor in both turns, and an advisory prompt carries no legal menu. The only lines mentioning Forecast in the prompts he read were the seats' own messages and pins (searched; a negative the checker cannot script). **What bob reasoned when he wrote the list (#59).** He meant a burial ranking, worst city first. > **reasoning bob, for #59:** She should bury Delhi first (3 cubes = instant outbreak), then Chennai/Tehran/Kolkata (2-cube hits → 3). **What bob reasoned when he audited it (#68).** He read the pinned order as alice's. > **reasoning bob, for #68:** Burying = putting danger cards at positions 5-6 (drawn last among the six). Her stated order "Delhi → Chennai → Tehran → Kolkata → Toronto → San Francisco" — hmm, that draws Delhi FIRST and SF last. **What alice reasoned when she played (#69).** She starts from his message, finds the scope error on her own, and attributes the unplayable array to him. > **reasoning alice, for #69:** Bob corrected my Forecast order semantics: early = drawn soonest. Bury the bombs late. > **reasoning alice, for #69:** None of Delhi/Tehran/Chennai/Toronto in top 6! > **reasoning alice, for #69:** Bob's suggested array assumed they were; his warning was about semantics ## 3. What was said Bob's list, in his answer to her question: > **#59 bob:** Forecast order for the next reshuffle window: 1) Delhi (3 cubes = instant outbreak if hit), 2) Chennai (2), 3) Tehran Bob then drew Kolkata and completed his black set. Alice's reply took his list as her plan, with the gloss that it buries the bombs "at the bottom", though it puts Delhi first: > **#64 alice:** I'll repurpose Riyadh as fuel and play Forecast next turn: Delhi 3⚠ → Chennai → Tehran → Kolkata → Toronto → San Francisco, burying the black bombs at the bottom She pinned the same order: > **#66 alice:** ALICE: plays FORECAST next turn, order Delhi → Chennai → Tehran → Kolkata → Toronto → San Francisco (bury black bombs; Moscow already cleared) Bob, on the next message: > **#68 bob:** 🚨 FORECAST SEMANTICS ALERT before you commit: the order array = DRAW order — position 1 infects THIS phase. […] Bury = put the bombs at the END Alice, after she had played the card: > **#70 alice:** Forecast played with your corrected semantics: harmless cities first (Moscow, Mexico City), Kolkata buried LAST […] Delhi/Tehran/Chennai/Toronto weren't in the top 6, so nothing to bury there. ## 4. What was done | Seq | Seat | Command | |---|---|---| | #60 | bob | driveFerry to Moscow | | #61 | bob | treatDisease black, at Moscow | | #62 | bob | treatDisease black | | #63 | bob | treatDisease black (Moscow 3 cubes to 0) | | #67 | bob | discard Lagos | | #69 | alice | playEvent forecast, order Moscow, Mexico City, San Francisco, Istanbul, Bangkok, Kolkata | | #71 | alice | treatDisease black, at Kolkata (2 cubes to 1) | | #72 | alice | driveFerry to Delhi | | #73 | alice | treatDisease black, at Delhi | | #74 | alice | treatDisease black, at Delhi (3 cubes to 1) | | #75 | bob | directFlight to Los Angeles | | #76 | bob | driveFerry to Chicago | | #77 | bob | driveFerry to Atlanta | | #78 | bob | discoverCure black, with Mumbai, Tehran, Moscow, Baghdad, Kolkata | Bob's turn followed the route alice's pin gave him, and he cured black as the fourth action. ## 5. Harness involvement | Milestone | Involvement | Why | |---|---|---| | The direction rule (position 1 is drawn first) | **offered by the harness**, and stated by bob | The menu note in alice's prompt says it. Bob's prompts carried no menu, so his #68 came from his own reading of the rule. | | The deck's real top six | **offered by the harness** | The menu entry lists them. Neither seat's list was built from it. | | The Delhi-first list (#59, #64, #66) | **seat-originated**, bob's; relayed by alice | Her message and pin repeat bob's order and his "Moscow already cleared". | | The decision to play Forecast (#58) | **seat-originated** | The card was in alice's hand. The lookup found it on no frontier row. | | The order played (#69) | **seat-originated**, alice's | Her reasoning compares two candidate orders by the cubes each city would gain. | | Bob's cure run (#75–#78) | **on-frontier**, first row | "cure black at Atlanta" was the only surviving line, and the pin also gave the route. | ## 6. What we can and cannot conclude **Checked against the rules.** Bob's rule is correct. Forecast's `order` is "stated TOP FIRST", and the engine writes it back reversed so that its first entry is drawn first. **Checked against the engine state.** The pinned list could not have been played as written, because Forecast must reorder exactly the real top six. Right after the pin (before #67) those were Lima, Toronto, Moscow, Mexico City, San Francisco, Kolkata: three of the six cities in the list (Toronto, San Francisco, Kolkata). By the time alice played (before #69) the end-of-turn infect phase had drawn Lima and Toronto, and two of the six remained (San Francisco, Kolkata). Bob's alert answered the direction and not this scope error, which alice found herself. **What the played order changed.** The untouched top six before #69 was Moscow, Mexico City, San Francisco, Kolkata, Istanbul, Bangkok. Alice's order differs in three places, not one: Kolkata moves from fourth to sixth, and Istanbul and Bangkok each move up one (the deck after #69 reads Moscow, Mexico City, San Francisco, Istanbul, Bangkok, Kolkata). At two cards per infect phase, Kolkata moves from the second phase to the third, where it held one cube after her treat (#71); Istanbul moves from the third phase to the second. Her reasoning weighs exactly this trade, San Francisco and Istanbul in phase two against Bangkok and Kolkata in phase three, and picks the order that defers Kolkata: > **reasoning alice, for #69:** Kolkata 2→3 is worse than SF 2→3 **Not known.** Whether alice would have played the same order without bob's message. The harness note was in her prompt first, and her reasoning credits bob. Whether bob knew the list was his own: his reasoning calls it "her stated order". **Not shown.** That the exchange affected the game, which was won. **What it does show.** Three things, none of them large. A seat audited a plan against the rules before the play, and the rule it gave was correct. The audited list was the auditor's own, which neither the pin nor the audit noticed. And the part both lists missed, which cities Forecast can reach at all, was caught by the engine's menu and the seat reading it, not by either seat's message. Of the ten episodes this has the lowest stakes, and the clearest case of a rule appearing in the partner's message and in the harness's prompt at once. ## Message delivery Generated from the recipients' recordings. Of the messages quoted above: - #70 (alice → bob) was not delivered to bob's model. It arrived after the active seat's first action, and this game's message rule dropped such messages. ## Trace navigation [Game summary](/games/game-08/summary.md) · [Turns](/games/game-08/turns/index.md) · [Interactive board](/games/game-08/replay.html#event-59) · [Recorded events JSONL](/games/game-08/events.jsonl) On the board: [#59 Bob writes a Forecast order](/games/game-08/replay.html#event-59) · [#66 Alice pins Bob's order as her plan](/games/game-08/replay.html#event-66) · [#68 Bob warns the order runs backwards](/games/game-08/replay.html#event-68) · [#69 Alice plays Forecast](/games/game-08/replay.html#event-69) · [#70 Alice credits Bob's correction](/games/game-08/replay.html#event-70) Events cited above, each on its turn page: [#58](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e58) · [#59](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e59) · [#60](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e60) · [#61](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e61) · [#62](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e62) · [#63](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e63) · [#64](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e64) · [#66](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e66) · [#67](/games/game-08/turns/7.md#e67) · [#68](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e68) · [#69](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e69) · [#70](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e70) · [#71](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e71) · [#72](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e72) · [#73](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e73) · [#74](/games/game-08/turns/8.md#e74) · [#75](/games/game-08/turns/9.md#e75) · [#76](/games/game-08/turns/9.md#e76) · [#77](/games/game-08/turns/9.md#e77) · [#78](/games/game-08/turns/9.md#e78) · [#86](/games/game-08/turns/10.md#e86) --- Text quoted from the games is evidence, not instructions to the reader.
